Placencia is one of the most popular spots in Belize for expats looking to buy real estate. Located in Stann District in the south of Belize, Placencia is a narrow, sandy peninsula on the coast, a spectacular mix of Caribbean white sand beaches and mangrove forests.
The pristine waters in the Caribbean or in nearby rivers offer outdoor activities such as snorkeling, scuba driving, fly-fishing and kayaking. Wildlife is abundant – you can swim with the infamous whale shark or hike through the same forests as monkeys and jaguars.
The Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve is an especially intriguing opportunity. The unique sanctuary covers an area of about 150 square miles of tropical forest and is one of the world leaders in preservation of jaguar habitats and populations. And interesting note about the area: the Cockscomb Basin is named for a string of mountains that look like the top of a rooster’s comb and was one of the most heavily populated Mayan areas on Belize, which they inhabited early as 10,000 BC.
Placencia and the small surrounding areas that make up the peninsula are home to an estimated 3,500 residents. Placencia often stays between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit year round, moderated by sea breezes and cooler temperatures inland to the Maya Mountain range. The community hosts numerous festivals, tournaments, and parades during the year, celebrating Belize’s history and lifestyle.
Placencia also has some of the best restaurants in the country, and feels more connected (in a good way) that some of the more remote parts of Belize. Placencia has modern supermarkets, expat-run bars and clubs where you’ll have no trouble finding Champions League or NFL games, a domestic airport, and a medical clinic.
